What is The Love of God?

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

It can be hard sometimes for us to see the love of God, especially in a world that's so dark and corrupted. God demonstrates his love toward us everyday whether we realize it or not. God has made his love known to all humanity, through Jesus Christ. There is a very familiar passage of Scripture in fact it is so familiar that even those who do not read the Bible are aware of this portion of Scripture. The Scripture is John 3:16, which reads: for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have ever lasting life. This scripture may seem so common that is the reality of the truth slips away from the listener or reader. But there is so much reality in this passage of Scripture, so much profound truth can be found within its meaning. We should never get too comfortable reading God's Word that it goes into one ear and out the other. We should never get so comfortable or so familiar with God's Word that we treat it with contempt.

 God's Love for the Sinner

The first part of this passage for God so loved talks about how much love God shows towards humanity. The whole world of humanity is in sin, all Mankind are in a sinful state, according to the Scriptures. This can be found in Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Humanity as a whole are under the judgment of sin and death. This is due to the transgression of Adam and Eve, our first parents. Adam was the representative of all mankind and when Adam sinned, all humanity also sinned because all of humanity was within his loins. The Bible is very clear that the world of humanity is under the penalty of sin and as a result, man is eternally separated from God.
Romans 3 23 Sin Seperates us from God
Our Relationship with God was destroyed by sin

So when we look at the phrase for God so loved the world we must understand that God loves sinful humanity with a deep love. His love is so deep for sinful humanity that He decided to do something about their sinful state of being. This idea of God's love is not easily accepted by some because they have been programmed to believe that God hates them. You have some people out there who believe that God does not love sinners and that He hates the world(usually the religious hypocrites). Jesus was confronted with the same mindset in the scriptures. We can find this example in Mark 2:15-17: And it happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him. When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, “Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?”  And hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”  According to the Pharisees(the religious leaders)  these men were low lives and looked down upon. They believed that anybody who wasn't apart of their religious affiliation were outside of the love of God. They were perverting the representation of God and His Love. The truth of the matter was that God LOVED ALL THE WORLD, YES, ESPECIALLY THE SINNERS. Jesus summed it up in His profound statement: “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners. The world is sick and Christ, The Great Physician has come to administer his healing. Christ has come with the cure for the disease of sin.

God loves the sinner but hates the sin

So the Scripture has made it very clear that God has much love for the sinner, but this should never be misunderstood to mean that God condones sinful behavior. God never condones sin, never accepts sin, the fact of the matter is God is holy and will not allow sin in His presence. Like the saying goes God loves the sinner but hates the sin.

God's Gift to a sinful world

The next part we will look at is that God gave His only begotten Son.God displayed the greatest demonstrations of love is through giving up His only begotten Son as a sacrifice. Not only did God give but He gave that which was most precious to Him. The Heavenly Father gave His Son to a race of undeserving human beings so that they would not die eternally. He knew that the only way for sinful humanity to dwell with Him forever was if they were as holy and righteous as He is. So The Heavenly Father prepared a substitute for Humanity, Jesus Christ. Jesus would take away the sin that separates man from God. Jesus made the greatest change, His holy righteousness for our sins. The holy righteousness is the exact same holy righteousness as His Heavenly Father. Jesus made the sacrificial death on the cross. On the cross God made Jesus be sin so that sin would be punished and so that we may obtain His righteousness. 2 Corinthians 5:21 declares: He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Through the substitution death of Christ Jesus, human being are now able to have a relationship with The Holy Father God.

Salvation comes to those who receive God's Gift of Love, Jesus Christ

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. The gift of Christ is given freely to all of humanity but it will only be credited to those who receive the free gift. God does not force his gift of salvation on anyone there must be a willing recipient. One must come to a point within oneself and say yes, I will and I do receive God's gift, Jesus Christ. So anyone who places their faith on the person of Christ, all that He is and says will have eternal life. When someone does this, the Bible says that by faith, he will be made righteous before God. Now they will be reconciled to God, now they will be able to have a relationship with the Holy Father God. They will also be given the gift of The Holy Spirit, a foretaste of the glories yet to come. God adopts them into His family, making them His children and heirs of all that belongs to Him. To sum it all up, God is love and His love is so deep and profound that it reaches out to His enemies. His love then saves and transforms his enemies into His own children. All this is made possible through the Love of the Father and the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ. This is the love of God
